Reflections

January 4, 1999

Today is Louis Braille's birthday.

Somehow I can sense him. When he was 3 years old he was determined to create something with a scrap of leather he found in his father's saddle shop.

His small hands struggled with the leather and heavy tools, forcing a hole through a thick hide. Unfortunately, while leaning close to the bench and applying patient pressure to his work, the awl flew into his face, causing blindness.

Louis' determination, optimism, and desire to learn was unstoppable. As he approached schoolage, he was quick to listen and learn and explore his surroundings. He was a gifted musician who figured that if he could learn to play the piano and organ skillfully, he could also learn to read and write tactually. Louis wouldn't stop for anything if he got an idea in his mind.

I believe that somehow a tiny speck of Louis Braille entered my spirit, perhaps when I was young and wasn't even aware. Somehow I can sense him.

Happy Birthday Louis!
