Some Tips on Selecting Shoes

T The best shoes are those with adequate support. The heel area should be semi-firm to firm in order to maintain the heel in an upright position. This is known as the heel counter area.

Lace up type shoes (as opposed to slip on shoes) usually provide the best support and they cab be loosened or tightened to accommodate swelling in the feet or bony prominences on the feet.

Athletic shoes (tennis shoes, running shoes) have the attributes of a good shoe.

Your new shoes should have enough room to accommodate the addition of a separate arch support or
orthotic device. Most athletic type or walking shoes have this attribute.

Provided you have selected a shoe with good heel support and shock absorbing outsole, your own comfort when wearing that shoe is most important. Your new shoes should feel comfortable the moment you put them on.
